Lost Your Only Car Key? Here’s What to Do

Need lost car key replacement? Whether your only key has disappeared around the house, fallen out of your pocket at the beach or vanished while you’re travelling, losing your last car key can quickly turn into a frustrating experience.

The good news is that you don’t necessarily need to tow your vehicle to a dealership or wait weeks for a replacement.

At CRI-key Access Security & Locks, we provide mobile automotive locksmith services throughout Busselton, Dunsborough, Margaret River and surrounding areas of South West WA.

Here’s what you should know if you’ve lost your only car key.

Lost Car Key Replacement: What Are Your Options?

One of the biggest mistakes people make is attempting to break or drill the ignition lock to get their vehicle started.

Modern vehicles use electronic immobiliser systems that prevent the engine from starting without an authorised key.

Even if you manage to remove the steering lock or turn the ignition, the immobiliser will generally prevent the engine from starting.

You could end up with a damaged ignition, additional repair work and a vehicle that still won’t start.

Our advice: leave the ignition alone and contact an automotive locksmith.

1. Have Your Vehicle Details Ready

When you contact us about a lost car key, we’ll generally ask for a few details:

  • Vehicle make, model and year.
  • Registration number, if available.
  • Whether the vehicle uses a traditional ignition key or push-button start.
  • Your current location.

In some cases, the vehicle identification number (VIN) can also help us identify the correct replacement key.

With this information, we can determine what’s required and provide an estimate before attending.

2. You Might Not Need a Tow Truck

Many people assume that losing their only car key means having their vehicle transported to a dealership.

Fortunately, that’s often unnecessary.

Our mobile automotive locksmiths carry specialist key-cutting and programming equipment, along with replacement keys for a wide range of vehicles.

Approximately 99% of our lost-key jobs are completed onsite.

For most vehicles, we can have customers back on the road within one to two hours of arriving, although more complicated vehicles can take longer.

Whether your car is parked at home, at work or somewhere considerably less convenient, we can often come to you.

It’s also worth checking your roadside assistance or insurance policy. Depending on your cover, they may contribute towards replacement costs or towing if it’s required.

3. Even Difficult Vehicles Can Have Alternatives to the Dealership

Over the years, we’ve encountered some unusual lost-key situations.

One involved a Porsche that had been towed from Perth because the owner couldn’t find anyone other than the dealership willing to replace the keys.

The dealership had advised a waiting period of approximately six to twelve weeks.

We sourced the required parts within one week and successfully made replacement keys.

Another memorable job involved a Holden Commodore bogged on an off-road four-wheel-drive track.

We made replacement keys for the vehicle, then helped winch it out.

These jobs demonstrate that losing your only car key doesn’t always mean being stranded for days or waiting weeks for dealership parts.

4. Consider Deleting the Lost Key From Your Vehicle

Depending on the vehicle, we may be able to remove the missing key from its immobiliser system.

For some vehicles, this is a necessary part of the replacement process. For others, it’s optional.

If you suspect your keys have been stolen, we strongly recommend removing their electronic authorisation where supported.

If you know where the missing key is and there’s a reasonable chance of recovering it, we can discuss whether retaining its programming makes sense.

Keep in mind that electronic key deletion doesn’t necessarily prevent a missing mechanical key blade from unlocking the doors.

5. Get a Spare Key Before You Need One

One piece of advice we regularly give customers is simple:

Having a spare car key made while you still have a working key is significantly cheaper than replacing your only key after losing it.

And if you’re heading away on holiday, take both keys.

Keep them in separate bags, or if two people are travelling together, have each person look after one key.

It’s a simple precaution that could save a holiday from turning into an expensive inconvenience.
